You never know what lies beneath the smile.

It could be true happiness or horrible sadness.

This blog is just an insight to me and who I am.

Friendship

What comes to mind when you read this word?  It can mean so many things to everyone.  I know when I hear this word I think of Kaylee Rae.  Man, that girl is the bestest kind of friend a girl could ask for.  It's weird to think that we have been friends for so many years.  The trials we have faced since that first day are unnumbered and yet here we are.  Still bff's.  What a cool thing!
We are so different from each other and yet we are so similar.  I love that we can not talk for days, weeks, or months and that second we begin talking it's like there was never space between us.  Even when she moved to Hawaii and we didn't get to run together every day or at least talk in the evenings our friendship remained intact.
I have been through Hell many times and every time that I'm ready to look up, there's Kaylee reaching out a hand.  Especially since we moved into our little apartment together.  There were so many nights that I just sat on the floor and cried for hours.  Every single time she was there for me, tissues and ice cream in hand.
When I think of the word friendship memories play through my head like an old slide show.  I see swing sets where we would play on instead of running in cross country, posters of Zac Efron covering every inch of wall space, bags of chocolate chips, hiking mountains, and just driving down streets getting lost for hours talking about life.  Tears are always involved but so is laughter.
Tonight we took each other out to Pizza Pie Cafe to kick off Spring Break.  Probably the best date I've had in a while!  We could have eaten so much more but laughing always makes it hard to keep food in the mouth! I seriously love that girl!
It blows my mind that she is planning a wedding.  I couldn't be happier for her and Matthew!! What a lucky guy!!  It's just weird to think that my best friend, my sister, will be married a year from now.  And yet, I know things wont change between us.  Late night calls looking for advice or a needed ice cream break will always hold our futures together!
Come Hell or high water, we're all in this together!!!
(Yes I did just quote Zac Efron....Twice... Be jealous.)

Day 1

Breathe in.
Breathe out.
In.
Out..
Whew!!
Here we go.
The love of my life is now in the MTC.  What a crazy mix of emotions.  I am so very proud of him!! He is the first of 5 in his family to serve a mission.  What a great thing to choose to do with his life.  I know he will serve the Lord with honor and bring so many people joy and peace with the gospel he will be teaching in Australia.
Eh.  Australia.  8009.5 miles away. For 3 weeks he will be literally blocks from me. And after that....8009.5 miles... It's a good thing too.  I know if he was in the US I would probably find a way to see him.  But Australia is good.  It's far away. Far. Far. Far away.  And pretty safe.  I don't have to worry if he'll get some strange disease or anything like that. Mail takes 3-4 weeks. So not too bad.  A letter sent every week should be good...
Australia is so far away.
But I can do this. 730 days. 96 weeks. 24 months. However you choose to look at it.  One of my little cousins gave me the idea to make a fleece blanket for Thomas.  Every month tie on another square.  So by the time he comes home he will have a full size blanket.  Cute, huh?  And I have a list of 22 Temples to visit in 24 months.  Also there is a blog with ideas of something to do for every month.  Plus going to school is going to help.  Kaylee and I are training for a few races this summer so that will be good too.
Every post I write about waiting for Thomas I'll add in a little story or a favorite memory from our time together.
I guess I should start off with the night I met him.
December 3rd 2011
My girl friend, Raven, had the biggest crush on this guy from her work and she wanted my stamp of approval. She found this dance at a local apartment complex that was a masquerade dance and she asked him to it.  Her other girl friend was coming to give her stamp as well.  Raven had to drive and her friend, Lindsey had a dress so large that she had to sit up front.  That left me in the back.  The entire time I was kinda not happy.  I really did not want to sit next to Raven's crush.  He lived somewhere in Provo and we couldn't find his house!  Raven's GPS didn't work nor did Lindsey's.  Only mine worked which I still find odd to this day.  We pull up to his house and he's standing there waiting for us.  He climbs in the back seat and Raven begins to introduce us to each other.
Raven : "HI!  Are you having a good night? Well this is Lindsey and that's Becca."
Raven's crush : "Hiya! Thanks for picking me up guys!  Nice to meet you Lindsey and Becca.  My name's Thomas.  So... how old are you guys?"
Lindsey : "I turn 20 in June!"
Me : "I'll be 21 in April..."
Thomas : "Wow..... you're old...."
Me : 0_o "EXCUSE ME???  Don't you know you should respect your elders?"
How rude right?  Well for the rest of the drive Thomas and I sat in the back seat of Raven's car just talking, teasing and kinda flirting.  I'll never forget the feeling I got when he climbed into that car.  I was ready to give attitude and make this kids night awful.  If my friend was crushing on him, I had to make sure he was worth her love.  But just a single moment with him and it was like I was falling through the air.  I had a hard time breathing, it was like my lungs forgot how to work.  I had goose bumps all over my body.  And yet, through all of that the biggest thing was that I felt peace within me.  When he would look over at me I couldn't help but smile.  And I was just myself.  Nothing else.  It was like the mask I have worn my entire life meant nothing to him because he could see right through it. He could see straight to my heart and at that moment my heart was his.

What Now?

Tomorrow is the start of my 730 day countdown.  I'm going crazy here!!!  Most of my homework is done for the day and I even started/finished homework that isn't due until next week.  Clothes are in the wash, dishes are done.  What do I do now?  I have no letters to write. No one is home to distract me.  I've read every possible blog about waiting for missionaries and that helped a lot but it's only 4 p.m. Time is going by so slow today!!  I need to be busy.  But there's nothing I can do today. I wish I could just sleep away these next 2 years.  Yeah, that would be great!! And then I could wake up to my true loves kiss.  Awww!! :)
Ok I need to stop watching princess movies...
Maybe it's time for a horror movie night.

Living In A Barbie World

Kaylee and I currently live in the awful world of Barbie Land.  Our 2 roommates are barbie dolls.  I always knew there were high maintenance girls out there but man, these girls put others to shame.
Our fridge is full of diet foods and other scary things that make my milk smell funny.  One of the first days we were living together I walked past the bathroom vanity to see our roommate, Brittany, doing her hair. But half of her hair was on the counter!! It took me a minute to realize that they both have extension that must be clipped in at the start of every day but still! It was a shock to my system.  They spend hours in front of that mirror getting ready every day. It amazes me every time.  At least when I get married my husband wont wake up that first morning wondering what happened to my face and hair.
Yes Kaylee and I do have boyfriends and will both be married fairly soon so we couldn't care less how we look and this fact drives Julie insane.  All we eat is junk food. For example Breakfast is two bagels, Lunch is some pasta, Dinner is chili and ice cream is a little snack we have about every hour.  Since moving in I have lost over 17 lbs (not on purpose mind you. stress and being anemic is an awesome diet). Julie has gained my weight.  She gets so upset when Kaylee and I sit on the couch watching wedding shows eating a bucket of ice cream and she's nibbling on a carrot.
The first time Julie tried to make us attend FHE we had just finished a hard core work out and were still sweaty and gross.  Julie promised she would dress down so we would feel more comfortable.  20 minutes later she comes walking down the hall in a Nordstrom hoodie, skinny jeans and toms.  Kaylee and I laughed and walked back into our rooms with a wave.  We live on such different worlds than these girls.
Julie currently has eight boyfriends who all know each other and enjoy staying at our apartment until curfew almost every night.  Brittany only has three boyfriends but one of them is a player and likes to hit on me and Kaylee which makes things so very enjoyable the next morning.
We have silent battles in this apartment.  No word is ever spoken to the other side but lines have been drawn and crossed.  I've had it here some days.  For example, our counter for the bathroom is shared between all four of us. One big mirror and two sinks.  The right side belongs to Kaylee and I, the other, Brittany and Julie.  1 morning I plugged in my flat iron and walked back to my room to get dressed.  When I returned my flat iron was unplugged and moved under the counter while Julie and Brit were getting dressed.  Umm no.  Not ok. I have to get ready too.  Even if I only take literally two minutes to put on make up IF I even put it on I still expect you to respect my things. Easy enough right? Wrong.  There might come a day that their flat irons, curling irons and 3-barrels just maybe end up in the trash.
One other thing.  I don't care if it's just Kaylee and I watching a movie or if we have friends over or if our boys are over.  We're watching a movie.  Don't kick the door in, turn on all the the lights and talk as loud as possible.  If you must make food, make it quietly. And then leave.  You are aloud to eat in your bedroom.  You are not a part of our date night so buzz off or the next time you have boys over you're gonna miss the nice, quiet, random girls you live with.
Well my ranting is over the time being but I would like to leave on a happy note!
I'm not sure how many know but I am getting married May 2nd, 2014.  Yes I know, I meant to put 2014.  The man I'm going to marry is named Thomas Elder.  He leaves to serve an LDS mission in Australia Sydney Mission next Wednesday.   Crazy huh?  We have the wedding planned out for the most part and everything else I can take care of until he gets home.
He truly is the love of my life!  I cannot wait to spend the rest of time with him!!  Now just to get through these next two years.  Here is a photo of our 'pre-engagement'.  It's one of my most favoritest pictures ever!!
And this photo melts my heart every time I look at it.  We got to spend a short amount of time falling in love together and now we have to cross the bridge in front of us that is going to take two years but after that our path takes off into the unknown for all time.
Only 798 days left until I become Mrs. Rebecca Elder!!!

Oops...

I like to pull pranks on my friends and family.  Problem is, I'm not very good at it.  I smile and laugh and giggle and my face goes all red. People can see right through me.
Until yesterday.
On Tuesday at work this boy kinda proposed.  It was a joke...I think.  He asked me to Dougie, so I did.  And on one knee he fell.  I just laughed and walked away.
Yesterday my friend Keri and I were driving back over to campus and I'm giving her all the details and before I knew it, her eyes were brighter then the lights on my Christmas tree.  In that moment we concocted a plan. An evil plan.  An awesomely evil plan.
You see, there's this boy.  We like each other but he has major commitment issues so we're going to be 'just friends'.  Kinda feel like a roller-coaster some days. ANYWAY!!!
I pulled out this old ring I got in Vegas a few years ago.  It really is my idea of a perfect engagement ring.  And it's sparkly.  I put it on my finger and away to class we went.  I don't think we stopped laughing as we came up with the guys name to the date we were going to get married.
We walked into the class I have with this boy (we're gonna call him....Stefan), sat down next to him and introduced Keri to the guys I sit with in class.  Next I leaned over and whispered "Hi!  So....What are you doing December 15th?"
Stefan "Psh, I don't know. Why?  What do you have planned?"
I did the typical showing off the ring, careful to not let him look to close in fear he'd see how fake it is and squealed "I'M GETTING MARRIED!!!!"
I've never seen the color drain out of someone's face like that before.  One of my other guy friends, Fenox, began to freak out.  Keri and I began to tell the story.  I told the amazing story of how this guy dropped to one knee and how I said yes.
Stefan "How long have you been working there??"
Me "2 Days..."
Stefan "How long have you know this guy??"
Keri and I didn't think of this.... "ummmm...2 days.."
Fenox "What's his name?"
Me "Zac"    Efron- Psh I wish!!!!
Stefan "Last name?"
Shoot.....Keri told me a good one....what was is??? ..... it started with A....A....A...A...
Me "Armoni"
Keri begins to giggle even more because that was so far off from what we had decided but I totally spaced it..
I asked Stefan if he'd be there for me at the wedding because it would mean a lot to me to have him there.  He started to yell at me, telling me how stupid I was being, that I was rushing and there was no reason to, and that he wouldn't go and watch me throw my life away.
Ouch
Then he sits back, folds his arms and I'm pretty sure he wasn't breathing.  He was kinda mad.
Fenox is still freaking out, Keri and I can't stop laughing and we realize that we're loosing the guys.
Keri "Ok I still say we need to go to Allyssa's Bridal.  They have the cutest dresses!  Oh, you're gonna look like a princess!!!"
Me "Oh and there's this place in Spanish Fork, you can rent the dresses there!  That might be best.  I only have 2 and a half weeks to plan this.  "
Keri "Don't worry!!!  With my help, Katelyn and Shantell we can totally pull this off-"
Stefan "HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN ON A DATE????"
Me "no.... we're going tomorrow though..."
Stefan "hmpf"
Me "yeah, we need to start planning the wedding, ya know?"
Stefan "WHAT?!?!  WHAT KIND OF DATE IS THAT???"
And he kept ranting but he was actually kinda hurting my feelings so I turned to Keri and started to talk about different places we could go to find the right pair of shoes.
We made it about 20 minutes.  Fenox was still rocking back and forth in his chair and Stefan was beside himself.  I couldn't take it any longer, my face and abs were hurting from laughing so much!  I slipped off the ring and placed it on Stefan's knee.  I hear him say under his breath "thank god..." and before I knew it he was fake strangling me.  Fenox picks up his backpack and throws it at me and Keri busts out laughing even louder then before.
For the rest of class Keri and I teased the boys about how they fell for it.  Fenox would admit that we took 5 years off his life with all the stress and Stefan said he never believed us.  I smiled and said he believed me a little tiny bit and he whispered "fine, a little bit"
KNEW IT!
Class was over and the 2 boys take off to whisper.  Keri and I decided to follow.  We walked and teased each other until we got to the main building.  Stefan and Fenox start to head up the stairs and as Keri and I fall in behind Stefan gives me a look and I stop.  I know him well enough to know he's still mad.  Keri asks what should we do?
Me "We should stalk them."
I was kidding but before I knew it Keri was running up the stairs like a ninja.  Let's just say we weren't very good at it.  They spotted us a few times but we kept following them.  At one point we were hiding behind a wall when this cute guys walks up and asks what we were doing.
Keri "Stalking."
He looks down the sidewalk and smiles back at us "Oh."
Me "Yup!"
Random guy "Well, good luck with that!"
Keri "THANKS! Gotta go!"
And off we went.  We followed Stefan and Fenox all the way to Stefan's car.  Fenox turns to head back to his next class and Stefan gets in the car and begins to drive away.  Keri screams stop him so I step infront of his car.  Hands on my hips and all.  Then there was a click of the locks in the car.  Keri and I climb into the car and Stefan mumbles "Where to?"
Me "My car"
Keri tried to talk to Stefan, and I made him smile for a tiny second but he was still really mad.  He dropped us off and my car and speeds away.  Keri and I still were laughing.  We're really funny!!  I drive her home and we analyzed every moment of our amazing prank.  When I got home I texted Stefan to see how he was doing.... Nothing....
So yeah.... He's pretty mad and Fenox is finally starting to laugh about the whole thing.
I'm gonna start to bake some cookies now that I've shared my amazing prank with the world.  Those boys know me quite well, I'm surprised they actually believed I would marry a guy 17 days after meeting him. HA! Well, they did believe me.  So Cookies are in order.  Hopefully that will make up what we did to those boys. Even though a little tiny part of me says they deserved it.  An even larger part of me will still be laughing about this 20 years down the road.
Also, the last name Keri and I had come up with that I totally spaced at the worst moment...
Argyle.
Ha, Yeah.
I fail at pranks...

How Did This Happen?

How did I get here?
Why am I still here?
And more importantly, where do I go from here???

My whole life I swore up, down, left, right, forward, backward, North, South, East, and West that I would NEVER go to college.  I did everything in my power to not be here.
I had a plan.
I started MATC in high school so I could get a jump start on my education.  After high school I started working at the hospital along side with my family with the plan to take night classes just like my uncle and some day work my way up to the Operating Room cutting open people brains and fixing them.
I remember the panic I felt when I realized that I hated what I was doing at the hospital.  It killed me to face the fact that I didn't want to work at the hospital.  Nearly killed my family too.
I began to apply for the local Utah Clinics thinking I could continue with my plans but only in a different setting.  Weeks, even months went by and I didn't get a single call back for any of the jobs I applied for.  And every Sunday my uncle would remind me that I still had a place back at the hospital.  But I didn't want to be there anymore.  I tried that path.  And I hated it.
It was hard to realize my dreams weren't coming true and I fell into a dark place.  I hid from the world, family, and friends.  How could I admit to them that I had failed?
And then there was Kaylee.  She kicked me out of bed and we began to train for a half marathon together.  After that I just couldn't stop.  Ragnar, a Marathon and a few 5k's later I had a new dream.  To be a personal  trainer.  That sounded pretty cool and something I would love to do for the rest of my life.  Then I began to help my mom train and she lost a lot of weight (I would say how much but she would probably shoot me first).  And then my new dream seemed to crystalize.  But I wasn't ready to face it.
So I started working in Hell.....uh...I mean, Hobby Lobby.  It was great for a while!  I love the people I worked with and working in the frame shop was a blast.  I mean, I got paid to just break glass some days!  Hello?!  Doesn't that sound perfect for me?  Yup.  But after a while I couldn't progress.  And I started to fall back into the darkness that once had a huge hold of me. A quick trip to Hawai'i and I realized just how miserable I really was.  Funny that Kaylee seems to be so involved in my life changing paths.... Anyway.  I came home a quit.  I applied for UVU and was accepted there the next day.
2 months later and I was attending college.  I was scared out of my mind.  This was against everything I once believed in.  And I couldn't help but feel like running away some nights and maybe starting back over in Kindergarten.  I wonder if Miss Hylton would let me in....Hmmmmmm
Now here I sit in front of my laptop.  It's near the end of my first semester of college and I've already signed up for Spring classes.  I move out in about 3 and a half weeks.  The lowest score I've received on a test is 64% (but the highest in the class was 70%, so not bad, right?) and my average for a test is 94%.  I have amazing new friends and made some awesome memories with them.  My dreams are actually coming true and I feel like for once I've actually done something good with my life.
Crazy.
How did this happen?  Because God likes to work magic and with every wrong step you take somehow you end up a little closer to the right path.
How did I get here?  Honestly, I'm not sure.  But I'm pretty certain it has something to do with my stubbornness.
Why am I still here?  Oh man, somedays I wonder.  But I'm good at this thing called college.  I can keep progressing until I finally reach the top.  And once I get to the top, I'll find a new ladder to climb.
Where do I go from here? I don't know.  Maybe this time I'll leave it up to the Big Man.  Maybe the next step wont take as long and might be a little less painful.

Fall

I love fall!!!  It's the best time of the year!  And what's the best part of the best time of the year?  Oh yeah, jumping in leaves!!
The other day my friends and I were sitting in our Nutrition class when our teacher never showed up.  Oh the heartache.  But have no fear!  Fallen leaves are here!!!!  And you'll never believe this.  Kari has NEVER jumped in a pile of leaves before! O_o  Those crazy Arizonians..... So instead of sitting in class wondering what to do a few of us went outside to have a little fun.  I mean, this is college after all! ;)
 Starting the pile of leaves.
 Kari, Katelyn, and Corbin
People were walking by and we had to explain how cool we are.

You would never know but Kari is buried in that pile!!
 Kari's silly!

I'm really starting to like this game called College!
